Sydney Opera House The Sydney Opera House exists because a few brave people dared to think differently. From conception to completion, the building tested the limits of engineering, construction and design. Designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, this World Heritage-listed masterpiece represents a breakthrough in modern architecture. Jørn Oberg Utzon was born in Copenhagen in 1918. He grew up and was educated in Aalborg, an industrial city located in Jutland on the northeast coast of Denmark. In 1937 he entered the school of architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He worked for a short period of time for Hakon Ahlberg, an architect of renowned prestige in Sweden.
